Cheese Scones (Traditional & Vegan)

I should preface this title as it's written in my recipe book... 'Aunty Pat's Cheese Scones' because I have no recollection of where this recipe came from other than from my Aunty Pat. It was/is a family favourite. One of those nostalgic family recipes where flavour and deliciousness comes in equal measure from the actual food and the memories the food evokes. What would Sunday afternoons or late breakfasts be without Cheese Scones? 

Bonus - they are super quick to make. 

After giving up dairy the thing I struggled with most was giving up cheese. Vegan cheese just isn't the same. Substituting out the milk in the recipe for a plant based milk made little difference to the scone but I had to make a few adjustments when swopping out the cheese for a vegan cheese as it changes the texture. But I was determined to be able to still enjoy cheese scones every now and again. They also make a healthier alternative to cake if you are having someone over for tea.

I used Fairview Vegan Cheddar, please note that depending on the vegan cheese you use, it may alter the recipe slightly depending on the ingredients in your vegan cheese. But do give them a try!

So I share both the dairy-free (vegan) and the traditional family recipe....

Dairy-free (Vegan) Cheese Scones:

  • 3/4 cup grated vegan cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 tsp mustard powder
  • 2 tablespoons nutritional yeast
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • pinch of cayenne pepper
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 cup oat milk or plant based milk

Cheese Scones (Family Fav): 

  • 1 cup grated cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 tsp mustard powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • pinch of cayenne pepper
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 cup of milk

Method for both recipes: 

Heat oven to 180 C. Place all the dry ingredients into a mixing bowl and mix together. Add milk and mix through. Place mixture into a shallow muffin/cupcake pan filling each cup halfway. Bake for about 20 min depending on your oven. Vegan variety may need about 25 min. 

Extras: You can add some chopped herbs like chives to your mix or even a pinch of dried herbs like oregano works well too. You can also sprinkle the top with a dusting of smoked paprika for a richer smokey flavour.
