Paintings in the Post #893 Protea
I am going to let you in on a little secret…
There was time a while back when I got really sick and tired of painting proteas! And you know how much I love flowers, so that’s hard to admit. Proteas are just so incredibly beautiful and I love having them in my home so I always had proteas to paint if I was searching for reference material. I painted them often. Proteas also became the most commonly asked for flower in commissions and just about every bride’s bouquet that I painted for a while had…you can guess…a protea!
I think I started to paint them so often that I stopped really looking at how incredibly beautiful they are and just started painting what I know they look like. It’s the danger of familiarity for the artist. So today I really enjoyed taking it slow, taking time to really observe the colours, textures and forms.
Really LOOKING with keen observation and wonder and not just ‘seeing’ is such an important skill…even if you are not an artist!
Eyes wide open, always!
